Welcome To BeakGeek Beta

The goal of BeakGeek is to allow people to use the tools they like best to share info about birds, collect it here, add a bit of structure, and put it on a map. There will be more to it in the future, but that is the general idea for now. The concept is simple but the results can be powerful.

Here's an example of how it works...

- A person using Twitter sends a tweet with a hashtag that we follow such as #birds or #nwf or #oilspill
- We pick up the tweet here add a bit of structure and offer different ways to sort and display.

Here's how we place stuff on the map...

- Each item we save also gets sent to Yahoo Placemaker to see if there is any location info in the text e.g. "Fort Collins" or "Rocky Mountain National Park"
- If there is location info available Yahoo Placemaker returns the coordinates and we display that info on our map.
- Like this site, Yahoo Placemaker is still in Beta. It's working pretty well for us, but it is not perfect. The cool part is it does allow us to place these messages on a map without requiring the user to do anything but include the name of the place as part of the text. Simple is good.

Here's how you provide feedback...

We would like to make this site as useful as possible for the Birding and Citizen Science communities, so if you have feedback please use the contact form over at Metanomy.org
